An Epidemiological Study on an Outbreak of Typhoid Fever in 00 City, 1978

Abstract
Epidemiological investigation team; advisory officers on Preventive Medicine of the, Office of Surgeon General, ROK Army and Medical General Laboratory of Korean Armed Forces, was commissioned from the headquarters of ROK Army. to investigate an outbreak of unknown febrile disease, highly suggesting Typhoid fever, among cadets in Nov. 1978. The team investigated the outbreak and interviewed all cadets including inpatients isolated. Bacteriological study was done with the specimens of rectal swabbing and sera collected from all cadets (402) and 12 enlisted cadres who work in mess hall and food services.
Followings are the results obtained;
1. The entity of unknown febrile Disease was-identified as Salmonella typhi, D group (its antigenic structure: 09, 12, Hd).
2. Being informed of, the outbreak. 49 suspicious patients were isolated and treated with antibiotics without any confirmative microbiological test. And in addition to this, booster of Typhoid vaccine and chemoprophylaxis with chloramphenicol were conducted for the others prior to investigation. The estimation of attack rate, therefore, was not possible.
3. The outbreak was due to the infection during 3rd and 4th week in Oct. 1978, when all cadets were trained at the same camp. The source of infection might be either personal contact or contaminated utensil of the camp mess hall.
